Internet-Connected TV-Platform "Canvas" _________________________________________________________ December 2009 | BBC Trust Public Value and Market Impact Assessment of Project Canvas The BBC Trust has published its provisional conclusions from its assessment of Project Canvas. Project Canvas is a joint venture between the BBC, ITV, BT and Five to develop and promote a common standard that would allow digital terrestrial TV viewers with a broadband connection to watch on-demand services and other internet services without paying a subscription (other than for broadband costs). The BBC Trust's overall conclusion is one of potentially high public value by Project Canvas for particular audience groups and medium public value overall. Over time, the BBC Trust considers that Canvas may offer the potential for high overall value. Concerning the market impact, the BBC concludes that Canvas will have a positive impact on content providers provided access is available to the platform on a fair, reasonable and non discriminatory basis. Canvas is likely to grow the addressable market for VOD and other content and is also expected to allow content providers access to customers via Canvas at an on average lower cost than other platforms (as it is envisaged that Canvas will operate on a costrecovery basis) and with a reduced need to reversion and reformat content for multiple DTT platforms.
